How to Choose a Self Storage?

The facility of self storage is being utilized by a good number of people- not only by those who Relocate from one place to other but by many others like those who want to create extra space in their homes. Offices too use these self storages for keeping their documents and other records. However, when it comes to selecting a proper self storage, most of the people find themselves puzzled. Lets analyze the points to consider when choosing a self storage.
  • First of all, decide whether to go for a self storage or not? If you are moving temporarily, for say a couple of months, it is wise to store your belongings so that you will not have to spend a fortune to buy everything when you come back. However, if you are going away for a year and more than that, the cost of self storage should be considered prudentially. Think twice about whether it is beneficial to sell the things away and buy new ones when you come back or storing the things by paying a good amount of money?
  • The location of self storage should be decided carefully. If you are not moving and just keeping away certain belongings in the storage that you might need frequently, a self storage nearer to your place is ideal. However, if you are going away and relocating in other city or country, location will not matter so much. You can then go for the best deal after comparing the quotes of various self storage companies.
  • Size matters, in case of self storage too. Take an estimate of the things you are going to store and have opinion from someone who can guide you about the space required for storing away the things.
  • Next decide whether you should go for regular self storage or do you need climate controlled storage? Generally climate controlled storage units are more expensive as the storage facilities have to spend a lot on equipment for maintaining temperature and humidity. However, if you have valuable things like antiques or artworks, you might not be uncomfortable paying more charges.
  • Always find out the security provisions of self storage facility. While you are away, you must remain assured about the safety of your precious belongings. Read more about security and other aspects of self storage

Tips for Choosing Packing Boxes

Boxes are rather the basic and most important of all packing supplies. They have to be sturdy and of perfect size and shape to be able to protect our belongings. Lets see what other factors are important while choosing packing boxes- either for transportation or for storage.
  • Size of boxes are important. Its true that large ones can hold a lot of things but are not easy to transport! Choose smaller boxes for books and heavy items, and larger boxes for linens and clothing to keep them manageable. For other things, choose a box that is the appropriate size for an item, not too big and not too small.
  • As far as possible, corrugated boxes made of corrugated fiberboard should be selected as they can provide extra protection and strength. Select them especially for heavy or fragile items.
  • Try to buy special boxes for fragile items. Dish pack and glass pack boxes come with cardboard dividers and foam pockets for easy and safe packing. Use them for packing glasses, cups or liquor/wine bottles. Plastic, fabric-lined dish storage containers can also be purchased for packing valuable house wares.
  • To keep your precious clothing and other home furnishings intact, choose hanging wardrobe boxes that come in various sizes. Although they are heavy and take up more space but they keep the valuable linens in good condition. You can also use them to move chandeliers or delicate wind chimes that can be protected more efficiently while hanging than flat.
  • Wardrobe boxes also come in lay down avatar. They are like dresser drawers and great for packing clothes that you want to only fold once. However, overloading these boxes is risky as they cannot withstand heavy weight.
  • Use picture or mirror boxes for your precious possessions like framed pictures, artwork and mirrors. They can be put together to get a longer fit. However, strong filament tape should be used while fixing two boxes together. Use bubble wraps for extra protection of all framed items.
  • If you can afford, you must also go for mattress boxes that keep the mattresses from being punctured as also protect them from outer elements. Just make sure to buy the sizes that complement your mattresses- cribs, twin, queen or king-size, whatever they may be.

Self Service Moving- Things to Consider

Many people do not want to take all the services of packing and moving from the professional movers. Most of the time, the reason is the cost of such services. People who want to have budget moving go for self service moving for which many options are available these days- truck rentals, DIY moving and many such other options. However, to make self moves effective, one should be careful enough and consider certain factors. Some of such pointers are mentioned here for those desiring to move on their own.
  • Decide to opt for self service moving only when you are moving to a shorter distance. Long distance moving without professional help can be very painful.
  • If you decide to hire truck rental, ensure that the truck is neither too small or too large for your belongings. Use pillows, packings of clothes and such other items as fillers if there are gaps in a somewhat large truck.
  • When you opt for DIY moving, the trailer will be left outside your home for about two days to load your goods. Utilize the opportunity to the maximum and take as less space for loading as possible. The lesser space you use, lesser amount you'll have to pay. Discard the items that are not necessary to take along.
  • Ensure that the truck driver has the required documents and a valid truck driving license that is acceptable to both jurisdictions- originating location as well as the destination.
  • Most of the moving companies charge additional fee for such services as carrying objects up and down the stairs, transferring goods from a large moving truck to a smaller vehicle and to home. Thus ask clearly about all such charges before signing the contract. After all you are taking so much pain to save money, why pay without knowing?
  • For self service moving, generally the companies are not liable for compensating any damage. Inquire about the moving insurance and get proper coverage for your shipment.
