Packing Services for Hazardous Materials

When someone moves, s/he has the right to pack and take along all the belongings except certain non-secure items or the items that are prohibited from packing due to their high risk elements. However, there are many businesses that have to deal with certain hazardous materials. They have to be, anyway, transported for business purposes. There are specialized packing services for packaging of hazardous materials. Before knowing how these materials are packed, it looks apt to know about hazardous materials?

What Are Hazardous Materials?

The Institute of Hazardous Materials Management define hazardous material as "any item or agent (biological, chemical, physical) which has the potential to cause harm to humans, animals, or the environment, either by itself or through interaction with other factors." This covers many materials used in many workplaces for example cleaning supplies, paints etc. The businesses have to purchase, sell or transport hazardous materials on a frequent basis. As this activity cannot be totally eliminated, there are certain guidelines and legal requirements that have to be followed while packing such hazardous materials. Proper labeling and packaging of hazardous materials guard against accidents and prevent costly lawsuits which a company may face if it remains careless in such a sensitive issue.

International Guidelines for Packing Hazardous Materials

International agencies including FAO, UNIDO, OECD, the World Heath Organization, the United Nations Environmental Program and the International Labour Organization, place regulations on how certain chemical and other high risk agents must be labeled. This helps any packing company in determining if a material is hazardous. Generally, if a material has a hazard warning (inhalation, contact, etc.), it has to be treated as a hazardous material. The packages containing hazardous goods must have symbols on them to represent their classification like “Class 3 - Flammable Liquids”, “Class 4 - Flammable Solids”, “Class 8 – Corrosives” etc. Special Boxes are used for packing them such as UN approved IATA (International Air Transport Association) certified 4GV boxes.

Packing Services for Hazardous Materials

There are many professional packing companies who provide packing services for hazardous materials in adherence to Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) of respective nations and international guidelines regarding transportation of these high risk goods by road, sea and air.

Apart from using specialized boxes and labeling them properly representing the class of hazardous material, many companies also supply fireproof and highly absorbent Vermiculite loosefill and strong filament tape for securing cartons. Vermiculite is a natural, inorganic mineral that contains microscopic particles of water which when subjected to high temperatures, expand to many times their original volume. These lightweight minerals offer high insulation. They pour easily around irregular shaped objects and act as a cushion against impact, shock and rough handling. They are fireproof and safely retain leaks from packed materials. Vermiculite is UN approved for use in transporting hazardous liquids and materials.

Pet Moving- Do's and Dont's

Pet shipping can be a real headache! But its for our lovely pets whom we can't leave behind. As these dear creatures of ours can not talk and explain to us what they feel, we have to be all the more careful while pet transportation. How, otherwise, will we keep our lovely companions comfortable and stress free during the whole relocation process? Here are some do's and dont's for pet moving.

Pet Transport Do's

  • Plan Beforehand. Last minute decisions for taking them along result in buying of uncomfortable pet carriers and other bottlenecks.
  • As far as possible, don't change their routine till the day of moving. Walk them, feed them and play with them at the usual time so that they may remain stress free.
  • Get all their medical records from local veterinarian before the moving day. Also verify that these records are up-to-date.
  • On the moving day, leave them with some of your friends to relieve of pressure. They tend to become stressed during the chaos of moving. You can even leave them at day care center.
  • If you don't leave them anywhere, ensure to close the doors and windows of the room where they are placed during the loading of your packed belongings. There is always a possibility of their running out due to stress.
  • If you want yourself to spare from all the worries, you can even hire pet transport services that facilitate door to door relocation by picking up your pet a few days prior to the move and delivering it to your new location on a prescribed date.
  • If you are moving overseas and plan to fly with your pet, inquire about any requirement of airline with this regard. Know the facts about flying with pets.

Pet Transport Dont's

  • Don't travel with a sick pet or one with poor health. Moving stress can lead to their worsened health condition.
  • Don't take them on the moving van with the rest of your things! They are living creatures and can get uncomfortable.
  • Don't fly with puppies and kittens less than eight weeks old. They are anyway not allowed to fly according to rules.
  • Don't buy a carrier that is too hard or uncomfortable. Buy one which is insulated so that your pet may remain comfortable at any temperature.

Moving Overseas? Expats Mind the Culture of New Country!

Do you ever think of doing anything in the right way? Suppose you eat with fork and knife and while lifting some food item with your hands, do you think about which hand to use? While kissing or giving a warm hug to your female colleague, do you think whether it would be right or not to do so? I am hundred percent sure, you do not think this way. And why should you? After all you have grown up doing all these things in the way you do it now. But if you are planning for moving overseas then apart from knowing whats and hows of international relocation, you must also study about the right ways of doing things according to the new country's culture and traditions!

Here are certain cultural do's and dont's. However, the right way to know about any culture is to observe what locals do and follow suit.

  • If you are relocating to countries like China, Korea, or Thailand, refrain from touching someone while talking unless the person is a close friend of yours. They become uncomfortable with this gesture. In the Middle East, men and women cannot interact among themselves in public and if you try to touch them, just imagine what a mess you'll be in!
  • If you are moving to India, Africa, or the Middle East, remember using your right hand while picking up and eating anything served communally. If you are left-handed, explain it properly to your fellow diners before beginning to eat.
  • In Turkey and some Scandinavian countries, the sauna or hammam are considered pure spaces and even clothes are not allowed inside. However, if you are desperate enough to go there and can't even shed all of your clothes, wrap yourself in a towel- that is somewhat accepted there but do inquire about any such provisions first.
  • When visiting sacred places after moving to Asia in countries like India, Pakistan, Thailand etc. always keep your shoes outside any temple, mosque or other religious places. Taking shoes inside the sacred places is considered sin over there and even you wouldn't like hurting religious feelings of any community.
  • If you have expatriated to the Asian countries like Korea and Japan, don't get offended if anyone doesn't look straight into your eyes while talking. It may be rude in your country but not in theirs. However, in countries like America and Germany, you must make direct eye contacts if you don't want yourself to be considered rude and indifferent. If you are confused, just follow the golden rule- observe the locals of your host nation and know how you should look at them!
  • If you are about to relocate to Africa, Japan, Thailand, China, or Finland, start developing the habit of remaining silent while eating your meals.

The best idea will be to attend a cultural orientation program and learn all about behaving in public in your destination country after your international relocation. At home, of course, you can be yourself even if you are an expatriate! Someone has rightly said, home sweet home!

Tips on Office Moving

The task of corporate relocation is overwhelming, more than residential relocation. Here are some tips to make your office moving a smoother activity.

  • Be as time-efficient and as cost-efficient as possible. Moving an office means loss of valuable working hours. Minimize it by being efficient at every front.
  • If you would hire corporate relocation services, do it as early as possible. Professional movers are, any way, essential for moving large offices if a company wants to save valuable hours of its employees. Its good to hire them before at least 5-6 weeks ahead of moving date so that they may plan well for the move.
  • Planning is the mantra when you talk of effective performance. Plan out everything, create a floor plan. map out furniture and equipment placement scheme, decide about where the employees will be stationed at the new office and the like. A little more hard work here will save you a considerable amount of time, money and headaches in the long run.
  • Inform everyone- employees, landlords, and movers, about every detail of the relocation process. Tell the hired office mover about where each piece of furniture needs to be placed.
  • Ensure that you depute at least one person to be in contact with the movers and direct them according to the company needs. This person should be well versed about the requirements and must have approval about the new office layout. Changing the layout of the office later is not viable and not at all cost efficient.
  • Ensure that each piece that needs to be moved carries color-coded packing labels. These labels should be placed prominently on the packed office goods so that movers know exactly where they have to be moved.
  • Dispose of as much garbage as possible. If yours is a large company, you might need to have permission from responsible authorities about disposing off waste. Initiate the process early so that it completes before packing starts.
  • Make sure that all the facilities at the new office are installed before moving. This will save wastage of time and work could be started as soon as employees move to the new office. Check Internet connection, working phones and fax, restrooms etc.
  • Change your company stationery and business cards well in time. Place the new address and phone number, and circulate the information everywhere through every means. Mail them to your employees and clients. You would definitely not like to lose any of your customers just because you have changed your office address!
  • For rented items, clarify whether you need to contact your supplier. There may be contractual obligations requiring the rented equipment be moved only by the owner company.
  • Book the services of freight elevators, if any- both in old and new building. This ensures a rapid move.

House Moving? Plan Before You Move!

So, you got a new job in a faraway city! What have you thought then? What did you say, what's there to think about? You'll pack and go, it's that simple! But mind you, moving house is not so relaxing a job, it sure invites some stress. May be you are shifting for the first, time that's why you are not able to see the issues to be thought about before actual moving. I am not trying to be negative, just practical. And, its good to plan before you move. After all residential relocations doesn't only mean taking away your goods to a new location but the whole identity of yours move with you from one city to the other. Here are certain points to help you plan your house move!
  • Make your mind clear about which kind of area and atmosphere you want to live in the new place and also how big a house can you afford there (after all, cost of living is not same everywhere!).
  • If possible, visit the new house once and make an estimate as to how you can set your things and whether the location suits you.
  • Now take a look at your present house and your belongings. Classify them into categories such as things to be taken to the new location, things to be disposed off, items to be donated or sold out and so on. Get rid of anything that is not so essential to take along with you (lesser items will save you money, time and efforts).
  • If there are certain things that you don't want to dispose off but you can't even take them along or if you are moving for a very short period and will not need everything there, then think about and explore the possibility of self storage where you can put your belongings for a particular period of time.
  • Now decide whether you will hire professional movers and packers or go for self service moving. If you choose the second option, explore the options of self service moving suitable to you.
  • If you want your things to be transported by house movers, then find one that can give you services according to you needs and is within your budget.
  • Before finalizing the moving company, you will also have to decide about whether you'll go for door-to-door-relocation or you'll do some of the works, like packing, yourself.
  • Finalize the deal with the relocation companies by clearing all the doubts. Make agreements according to law and the company's policies.
  • Get the utilities such as gas, electricity, water, Internet, cable, telephone etc. disabled in the old home and prepare the documents required for taking connections or transferring the old ones to the new home.
  • Make arrangements for updating your address information with all the relevant institutes/offices such as cellphone service, insurance, loans, credit cards services, banks, government offices like for postal address change, car registration, drivers license, employer etc.

Although all these will take up your time and efforts but after making all these arrangements, you'll feel very light at your new house as there will be nothing pending to do at you old home city. All the best for your residential moving then!
