The US Moving and Storage Industry

The US has a very big moving and storage industry which consists of 8,100 companies with an annual business of $16.5 billion functioning in 17,000 locations and providing 122,600 jobs. It includes all kinds of businesses and services facilitating people in relocating either locally, nationally or internationally. Thus, the industry includes agents, forwarders, independent carriers, international movers, suppliers and van lines. The national moving companies are called van lines. The local agents work locally in coordination with the van lines. There are some others who work independently of van lines. Other than these companies, there are dependent contractors who own and operate trucks, tractors, and trailers.

To know how each of these contribute in the process of relocation and what roles do they play in the US economy, read The Role of Movers and Packers in US Economy and Relocation Process
